HOW TO SPONSOR A CAR TOUR

Definition: A “tour” or “run” is a group of corvettes traveling together to predetermined destination. The following are guidelines when you want to consider when sponsoring a tour:

• • • • Fuel stops: If possible, choose a place which offers a selection of different brands of gas within a close proximity. Allow 15-20 minutes depending upon the number of cars.
      • Restaurant stops. Allow plenty of time for group members to eat their meals. Suggest they not all sit at one table, but break in to smaller groups to speed the process.
      • Reassemble the group at a pre-determined time and meeting place before continuing.

3. Plan your tour in advance: This gives you time to check the route and publicize it at the club meeting, in the Glass Sass newsletter or through e-mail. Tour information includes:

• • • • Time of departure and meeting place location. Reminder to bring 2-way radios.
      • Destination, unless it is a mystery tour.
      • Estimated time frame, including leave and return times.
      • Estimated distance of the tour
      • Any costs associated with attractions, meals etc.
      • If a full tank of gas is needed.

4. Check your route for current road conditions and rest and meal stops: This may involve your driving the tour route just before the scheduled tour date.
5. For large groups, consider breaking into sections of 8-10 cars: Assign a tour leader for each section. This is an important safety issue. Drivers may take unnecessary risks to keep up with the group when stop lights or traffic separates the group.

6. At the tour meeting place:

• • • • Bring a club roster. Have the sign-up sheet and check it against the participants that are there. Contact those not there by phone to determine if they are late or unable to attend.
      • Inform the group of any last minute tour changes.
      • Provide information such as maps, turning on parking lights, rest stops, lunch/dinner plans, tour leaders (front/middle/back of group). Any tin cars on the tour are at the back.

7. Conducting the tour:

• • • • Monitor the group behind you.
      • Travel at a safe speed for all group members
      • Do not impede normal traffic.
      • Keep the group in the slow lane when possible.
      • Stay in contact with group members or tour leaders when moving through street lights or other congested areas.
      • Do not pull off the road and wait for the group unless it is absolutely necessary. And then, do so only in a safe location. Slow your speed somewhat if necessary. Remember the group will catch up.
      • Radio the group well in advance when exiting the freeway and give exit number.
      • Radio the group when you observe any road hazards (rocks, pot-holes, pedestrians/bicyclists) or when approaching any stops such as for fuel, restaurants, etc.
